Bellevue Hospital – Protector of Public Health: Transforming Critical Care to Fight Covid

An Event Honoring the Leadership, Doctors, Nurses and Staff

Watch this short video to experience the heroic role that Bellevue Hospital played in combating the Covid Pandemic of 2020

Bellevue – On The Ground: This video documents on the ground stories of Bellevue Hospital staff members who worked tirelessly and often at great danger to themselves to treat patients and keep the hospital running during the Covid pandemic of 2020.

On October 14, 2021, the Bellevue Association held the event “Bellevue Hospital – Protector of Public Health: Transforming Critical Care to Fight Covid: Honoring the Leadership, Doctors, Nurses and Staff” to recognize and honor Bellevue CEO William Hicks; Bellevue COO Marcia Peters, Bellevue Chief Medical Officer Nate Link, M.D., Bellevue Chief of Nursing Omar Abedalrhman, as well as countless other doctors, nurses, medical and non-medical staff whose dedication and bravery saved countless lives during the first devastating wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.

As the Covid-19 pandemic swept through New York City in March, 2020, Bellevue Hospital faced an urgent and enormous challenge: treating hundreds of patients coming to its Emergency Department every day suffering from this novel, frightening, and devastating illness. No one was prepared for the enormity of the pandemic. But the staff at Bellevue, often at great personal risk to themselves, worked non-stop to build new treatment areas specifically for Covid-19 patients and to develop effective and safe clinical procedures to save lives. Bellevue led the way for New York City and the country in devising strategies to combat the Covid-19 pandemic.

This is not a new role for Bellevue. As the oldest public hospital in the United States, Bellevue has been in the forefront of protecting the health of the public for almost 300 years. From yellow fever and typhus in the 1800's, tuberculosis and AIDS in the 1900's, to Ebola in 2014, and now Covid-19, Bellevue has treated victims of these devastating diseases, often at the sacrifice of its own staff. By protecting the health of the most vulnerable populations, Bellevue protects us all.

“Bellevue – On The Ground” is an inspirational story of bravery and duty which demonstrates why Bellevue Hospital is the most compassionate and greatest hospital in this country. We urged you to take a few minutes to watch. We promise you will be inspired and your faith in the spirit of New York City and the goodness of people will be renewed.

Funds raised by this event were donated to two critical services at Bellevue which support its patient population: Bellevue Food Pantry and Bellevue Early Screening for Lung Cancer.
